The techniques used in drawing in ink vary from cross hatching (overlapping lines at different angles), stippling (small ink dots), splattering (ink applied with a stiff brush or tooth brush in the form of a varying size dot pattern), and wavy lines, to name a few. All of the ink lines are drawn freehand with no straightedge tools used. This gives more feeling and character to the drawing and does not have that hard, mechanical edge to it.

I generally start with an idea of what the drawing will consist of. If it is an actual place or props that I have found in my research, I will photograph it very throughly from different angles to capture the composition I will use in the final drawing. I also take close-up shots of various elements so that no detail is lost in the completed artwork. You may be wondering why I work from photos and not do the drawing in the field at the site. Because of the amount of detail in my drawings, It takes an average of 75 hours to complete the original drawing. By referring to the photographs, all the angles of light and shadows are captured.
